REMINDER: NSLI FOR YOUTH: SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY LANGUAGE ABROAD – DEADLINE EXTENDED! Program Dates: Summer 2013 and 2013-14 School Year NEW Application Deadline: November 7, 2012 The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is a US State Department funded program which provides American high school students with free opportunities to study less commonly taught critical languages in overseas academic settings. Full merit-based scholarships are available to study overseas for summer and academic year programs in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajik), Russian, and Turkish. KENNEDY-LUGAR YOUTH EXCHANGE AND STUDY (YES) ABROAD PROGRAM Program Dates: 2013-14 School Year Application Deadline: January 10, 2013 The Kennedy-Lugar YES Abroad Program, sponsored by the US State Department, offers American high school students and recent graduates full scholarships to live and study for either a semester or a school year in countries with significant Muslim populations. For the 2013-14 academic year, students may live in one of the following countries: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Egypt (tentative), Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mali (tentative), Morocco, Oman, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia, or Turkey. The program includes home stay and high school experiences that are intended to increase mutual understanding between American youth and young people abroad, and to deepen appreciation for religious diversity. An additional important benefit is valuable exposure/immersion in a less commonly taught language. Applicants must be US citizens, 15-18 years of age, and high school students at the time of application. Finalists will be chosen based on their demonstration of global awareness, interest in diverse cultures, curiosity, and open-mindedness. CONGRESS-BUNDESTAG YOUTH EXCHANGE (CBYX) Program Dates: 2013-14 School Year Application Deadline: January 10, 2013 The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Program offers American high school students the opportunity to live and study abroad in Germany for an academic year through joint sponsorship by the US Congress and the German Bundestag. This fully-funded program includes cultural immersion through living with a host family and attending a German high school; intensive language course upon arrival in Germany; and meetings with US German and US government officials. Eligible students are US citizens or permanent residents, aged 15-18, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. AFS-USA administers the selection process and the program for Washington, DC. CONGRESS-BUNDESTAG VOCATIONAL YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM Program Dates: 2013-14 School Year Application Deadline: January 31, 2013 This is a very special, fully funded gap year or 13th year abroad for graduating US high school students with a vocational or career education background (the organizers use a very broad definition of vocational/career education). Co-funded by the US Congress and the German Bundestag, and administered by Nacel Open Door, this prestigious program is for mature and motivated high school graduates, 18 or 19 years old by July 1 of the departure year, and US citizens, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Prior German language study is not required. Participants will engage in two months of intensive German language training, host family placement, training/school attendance, and hands-on experience through an internship with a German company (they try to find an internship in the student’s field of interest). All applicants must be nominated by their high schools. This is a great opportunity; Germany is internationally known for the excellence of its career education programs. OPERATION UNDERSTANDING DC Program Dates: Jan – Dec 2013 Application Deadline: November 14, 2012 Operation Understanding DC’s mission is to build a generation of African American and Jewish community leaders who promote respect, understanding, and cooperation while working to eradicate racism, anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination. Each fall OUDC selects African American and Jewish juniors from DC area schools to take part in this one-year (Jan-Dec) leadership program. Students learn about their respective histories and cultures, take part in a 3-week summer travel program to sites of historic interest to African Americans and Jews, and return the following fall for leadership training and to lead diversity seminars. This is a great program for students with leadership potential and an interest in social justice and cross-cultural understanding. The program is FREE. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATORS FULBRIGHT-HAYS SEMINARS ABROAD PROGRAM - CHINA Travel Dates: Summer 2013 Application Deadline: December 10, 2012 The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program, funded through the US Department of Education, offers excellent summer study and travel seminars abroad for US elementary and secondary educators. All seminars are in non-Western countries, with the purpose of improving understanding and knowledge of the people and culture of other countries. Only one seminar is offered in summer 2013 – to China for four weeks – with only 14-16 slots available nationwide, subject to the availability of funds. Most expenses are covered; a very modest co-pay is required. The program is open to U.S. K-12 educators, administrators, and media resource specialists who have responsibility for curriculum and instruction in the social sciences, humanities, foreign languages and area studies. Applicants must have at least 3 years of full-time experience in their field. Those who work in high poverty, high needs schools are particularly encouraged to apply. DISTINGUISHED FULBRIGHT AWARDS IN TEACHING Travel Dates: 3-6 months during the 2013-14 School Year Application Deadline: December 15, 2012 Sponsored by the US State Department and administered by IIE, the Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching in the US and abroad. US elementary and secondary educators selected for this fully-funded program will study in an overseas research center or university for a period of 3 to 6 months. Awardees will enroll in graduate-level classes, be required to complete a capstone project of their own design, team-teach in local schools, and conduct workshops for host country teachers. They will be expected to share information about their experience within their schools and communities upon their return. Applicants must be US citizens, with a Masters degree or enrolled in a Masters program, and in at least their fifth year of full time teaching. K-12 teachers, guidance counselors, curriculum heads, media specialists/librarians are eliglble to apply. Participating countries in the 2013-14 school year are: Argentina, Finland, India, Mexico, Morocco, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK. Fund for Teachers enriches the personal and professional growth of teachers by recognizing and supporting them as they identify and pursue opportunities around the globe that will have the greatest impact on their practice, the academic lives of their students, and on their school communities. Full-time PK-12 teachers, with at least 3 years teaching experience, may apply for up to $5,000 individually or a team of teachers may apply for up to $10,000 for a summer learning experience of their own design.
